J. A. Stargardt Autographenhandlung- Founded in Berlin in 1830, since 1885 in the possession of family Mecklenburg

Autograph and manuscript traders and auctioneers

Our antiquarian department is devoted entirely to the fascinating field of autographs: to letters and manuscripts written by important persons in all fields of cultural history. Writers and scientists, plastic and performing artists, composers and conductors, statesmen, politicians and other outstanding personalities have all left letters and other manuscripts that bring their authors to life in a unique manner. Often, these manuscripts are the first and only testimonies to great moments in history.

Autograph auctions

Since the 1950s, we have been holding two-day autograph auctions on a regular basis. Our auctions count among the highlights in international trade and are visited by many private collectors, librarians, archivists and traders from all over the world. Anyone who is interested is cordially invited to attend our auctions at the next opportunity.

We have extensive stocks of autographs in all fields and regularly update them with purchases. At irregular intervals, we publish catalogues offering samples from our stocks. If you visit our Berlin offices near the Kurfürstendamm (link to city map), we shall be delighted to show you autographs from the various fields covered by our collections.

We are always interested in offers of manuscripts. Together with you, we can consider the best course of action for your autographs: whether to make a purchase from you for our stocks, or to include your autographs in one of our auctions. Acting in the capacity of commission agent, we can also directly arrange the sale of individual items and entire collections.

Our company is a member of the Verband Deutscher Antiquare (VDA), the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) and the Bundesverband deutscher Kunstversteigerer (BDK). We are bound by the codes of conduct of these trade associations. We are also a member of the Manuscript Society (MS) and the Universal Autograph Collectors Club (UACC).
